Armed Forces Day: Celebrating Your Hero

Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day every year on the third Saturday of May. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who serve the United States' armed forces.

Many members of the US Armed Forces are in long distance relationships. While the allure of these kind of relationships is fodder for romantic comedies at the movies, in reality, long distance relationships aren't always ideal.

Long distance relationships require a lot of commitment from the soldier and their beloved. You can't take for granted the physical intimacy that most couples share. Find ways to communicate to your soldier every day, even if they aren't in a position to respond. Talk about the future when you'll be together and be able to touch and share again.

When you and your loved one are reunited after a separation, make sure you make the most of your time together. Stay positive and trusting. Avoid feelings of jealousy. Because this time is so rare, take as much advantage as possible of your ability to be intimate with each other when you are together.

Phone sex is a useful tool for couples who are living far apart as it keeps you both vividly recalling just how much you love and are aroused by each other. Get comfortable, start with a casual conversation and then get graphic. Make sure you don't leave out any of the dirty details.

Send care packages to your soldier filled with treats. Include things in the package that will remind them of times you shared together, like photographs and souvenirs. You should also include edible treats and things that represent some of your shared interests.

Plan for the future. Make plans to see each other again before you separate. Talk about things you will do when your loved one is no longer in service to the country. Buy two matching calendars in order to cross off days until you will be together again.
